ODU Connectors Beyond 38999 – high performance military connector with 3 locking modes


ODU AMC® SERIES T – Connectors designed for military and security applications, offering three compatible plug locking options: Push-Pull, Break-Away and Thread-Lock – all fitting to a common bulkhead or receptacle across the equipment.

■   Push-pull plug reliably locks into the device with a ball-lock system.

■   Break-Away (or Snatch) plug is designed to release the connection with manual pull-force exerted, allowing quick and easy disconnection in critical situations.

■   Thread-Lock screw locking is particularly suitable for applications that have to deal with extremely strong vibrations.

The ODU AMC® Series T is designed to allow emergency personnel to quickly and easily clean the connectors and replace interfaces, even in the field under extreme conditions and stress, with mechanical and colour-coding preventing mis-mating.

Different transmission variants can be individually configured, even in the smallest installation space. The robust housings are waterproof up to IP6K9K being submersible to 20m for a duration of up to 2 hours.

The ODU AMC® Series T meets the requirements of MIL-STD-38999 and offers additional advantages, being certified to MIL-STD-1472 and MIL-STD-810, withstanding temperature extremes from -65° to +175° C and severe vibration.

Standard 38999 crimps and back-shells are suitable for use with this connector.

Cliff Electronics leaders in the design, development and manufacture of connectors and test equipment, have increased their market leading FeedThrough connector range with two new models providing 8K HDMI connectivity. Designed and manufactured in the UK the new connectors support the HDMI 2.1 format with a resolution of 7680 x 4320 and support HDR (High Dynamic Range) signals.

8K HDMI cables are widely used for transmitting video and audio signals from source to display for commercial AV, industrial and specialty uses – for example projectors, video conference systems, HDTV, monitors and more.

The female-to-female 8K HDMI FeedThrough connectors are available in two formats:

  • Industry Standard XLR form factor 24mm mounting hole, black plastic frame with 2.5mm countersunk or plain hole for front or rear mounting.
  • Compact “SLIMS” version for high density connector panels, with a 9 x 35.5mm frame and with a 17.15 × 22.86mm panel cut out. Customers can specify rugged front and rear (DUALSLIMS) mounting metal frames finished in natural nickel metal or black, or a front or rear mounting black plastic framed version. Both types are available with plain or countersunk fixing holes.

Cliff’s DualSLIMS FeedThrough connector range offers a more compact alternative to their very popular 26mm wide XLR form factor version. At just 19mm wide, up to 20 connectors can be mounted in a 1U, 19” rack panel, rather than just 16 of the XLR design. All FeedThrough connectors from Cliff can be ordered pre-assembled on rack panels to simplify and speed up system assembly. Other DualSLIMS FeedThrough versions available include widely used data connector types such as RJ45 and USB 2 and 3.

binder 707 series: M5 angled panel mount connectors


Small in size, great in potential

Compact, robust signal interfaces offering the greatest possible flexibility are particularly demanded in markets with pronounced miniaturization. M5 angled panel mount parts from binder support designers in space-critical applications in automation, robotics, metrology, and controls.

Drones, cobots, metrology systems

Within the binder 707 series, the components are now also available as angled panel mount variants.


Special design features

The M5 angled panel mount parts are equipped with slightly splayed positioning pins. Hardly visible to the naked eye, these ensure the best possible protection against twisting on the PCB even before the contacts are soldered. Another advantage is the deeper O-ring that seals the interface against the housing. When the panel mount parts are connected, the O-ring is pressed against the housing as far as the stop, thus optimizing the sealing effect. Destruction of the seal by overtightening is basically impossible. The M5 angled panel mount parts measure only 7.5 mm in width. This is significantly less than the usual dimensions for connectors, which facilitates use in confined spaces.

Guido Werner, product manager at binder for a decade, is convinced by the potential of the small circular connector design: “We have already registered numerous attempts by Asian manufacturers to replicate these connectors. However, apart from the benefit of lower costs, our customers realize once and again in practical use that ‘Made in Germany’ still plays in a different league.” Some customers, Werner reports, have had their experience, but have returned and are now convinced not to compromise on quality and reliability – even for a small connector.


Key figures at a glance

The 707 series angled flange connectors from binder are rated to 60 V and 1 A and withstand impulse voltages of up to 1.5 kV. The brass contacts are plated in gold. Both the housing and the screw locking threaded ring are made of brass; the contact body is made of Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP). In accordance to the IP68 protection degree, the interface is protected against dust and permanent immersion (1.8 bar for 24 hours) in water. Designed for operating temperatures of between -25 °C and +85 °C, it achieves a mechanical lifespan of more than 100 mating cycles.
