Smiths Interconnect announces today the release of the next generation of its modular Transformer Connector Range – Heavy Power Series, for on-board power applications within the rail market.

The Transformer Heavy Power Series employs a specialist do-it-yourself system based on the building block principle that allows manufacturers in the Railway industry to design their own interconnect solution by procuring the connector’s elementary piece parts. This translates into design flexibility and cost savings by reducing supply chain, cabling and maintenance costs, at the same time ensuring quick and flexible time to market. 

The key innovation of the next generation of the Transformer Heavy Power Series is Smiths Interconnect’s Tortac® technology, boasting the characteristics of the Hypertac hyperboloid contact on equal pin diameter to feature smaller pitches, higher contact density and higher current ratings.

Suitable for on-board applications requiring the transmission of very high currents such as power distribution, inter-coaches and bogies, the Transformer Heavy Power Series has been designed according to EN50124 PD4 to ensure the reliability of the interconnect solution in high voltage applications operating in a polluted environment. It contributes to prevent breaks down caused by overvoltage issues, while ensuring passengers’ safety. In addition, design and testing is performed according to NFF61030 & EN50467.

The connector is available in 1 to 4 pole versions and supports up to 300A, a voltage rating of 3600V continue and a withstanding voltage of 12kV. It is easy to assemble due to the adoption of just three contacts and can be used with cross section cables from 25 mm² to 70 mm². An anti-swaying device on the connector’s back end provides a safe and reliable solution for the cables and simplifies the installation of the jumpers.

A plastic insulator with aluminum frame ensures optimum protection against ballast and allows for weight savings whilst playing an important role in reducing energy consumption. Split Pair Quadrax contacts provide higher speeds

Smiths Interconnect, a leading provider of technically differentiated electronic components, subsystems, microwave and radio frequency products, announced today the introduction of the innovative split pair quadrax contact technology to its rugged D-Sub connector series.

The split pair quadrax is the next generation contact that provides robust high-speed performance compatible with existing qualified rugged D-Sub connectors. Existing twinax contacts support data rates of above 10 Gbps, but this performance is typically achieved at the cost of signal density in the architecture. Smiths Interconnect has designed a solution that isolates the individual pairs within the quadrax format in existing, space qualified, interconnect systems. The resulting isolated pair contact fits with our existing housings and supports high density data rates exceeding 10 Gbps. 

The Rugged D-Sub connectors with split pair quadrax contacts support all mechanical and environmental performance parameters with enhanced electrical signal integrity. The innovative isolated pair contact system is an ideal solution with individual twinax pairs within the quadrax format through the cable and contact.

The new extended range meets the high-speed application requirements of the Space and Mil/Aero markets.  These demands include the ability to reliably transmit and receive 10 Gbps and beyond with a stable characteristic impedance of 100 Ω and compliance to all MIL-STD-202 requirements for shock and vibration.

Circular connectors specifically for food and beverage industries from binder

binder, the leading industrial circular connector manufacturer, announces M12 A-coded connectors which have been designed specifically for a variety of applications in the food and beverage sectors according to FDA 21 CFR. The range includes moulded and angled male and female cable connectors and connecting cables with M12 threads. The moulded heads are made from cream-coloured RAL 9001 polypropylene plastic and the cables have a grey PVC jacket.
The connectors are available in three, four, five, eight and 12-pole versions in accordance with DIN EN 61076-2-101 and DIN EN 61076-2-104 respectively. Maximum current is 4A at 250V.
As well as the food and beverage sector, these new M12 circular connectors are suitable for use in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries and in other types of industrial food processing, including milk and cheese dairies, abattoirs, bottling plants and food storage.
These are all areas where stringent hygiene requirements have to be met for machinery, systems and components.

Because high pressure cleaning with aggressive chemicals is widely used throughout these food and beverage sectors, these M12 connectors provide protection to IP68 and IP69K.
These versions look different from standard M12 connectors while the light-coloured surface means dirt and residue are easy to spot. In addition to the existing tests and the UL certification that is under preparation, the connectors have been subjected to the Ecolab test seal that confirms the material’s resistance to detergents and disinfectants.

New Gold Plated 75Ω BNC FeedThrough Connecter from Cliff provides 12GHz connectivity

Cliff Electronics announces the introduction of a Gold Plated 75Ω BNC Connecter offering a 12GHz bandwidth suitable for 4K format video and other high frequency signals. The new BNC to BNC FeedThrough connector is mounted in a recessed socket plate which fits the industry standard 24mm XLR panel cut-out adding this BNC connector to the very successful Cliff FeedThrough connector range.

The Cliff FT series of true feed through data connectors for audio, video, electrical and electronic instrumentation are perfect for developing custom I/O configurations for wall plates, enclosures, rack panels, etc. All fit within a standard XLR panel cut-out and use standard cabling for front and back connections with no soldering or screw terminal connections required. FT connectors have countersunk mounting holes may be assembled from the front or back of a panel while a low rear profile accommodates the tightest behind-the-panel spaces.
